Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Christmas Sparkle
For those of you who celebrating Christmas this week, we hope the holiday brings you much laughter, joy and celebration with family and friends. If you haven't done so, remember to stop out and pick up a few items to help make the holiday a little brighter! Our suggestions: Festiva; a delightfully sweet, sparkling white wine similar to an Asti Spumante, Ruby LaBelle; a decadent Port–style dessert wine that will remind you of dark chocolate–infused cherries, Mead; our honey wine that makes a luscious, mulled hot toddy on a cold winters day. Put a bottle in a crock pot with a package of our special blend of mulling spices and simmer it on low for thirty minutes with a quarter cup of honey... Yum!

Have a festive holiday season, from your friends at Summerset! Cheers!

Tell me again — What was the "French Paradox"?
Taken from the "Wine Grower News #108 12–4–09"

The French Paradox was the observation that the French suffer a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease despite having a diet relatively rich in saturated fat. A description of this paradox was brought into the limelight by Morely Safer on CBS's TV show 60 Minutes on November 17, 1991 when Dr. Serge Renaud, a medical researcher from Lyon, France and Dr. R. Curtis Ellison, a professor of Medicine and Public Health at Boston University School of Medicine introduced Americans to the hypothesis that red wine lowers the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD). (1) Thus, the French Paradox! After this airing, the U.S. consumption of red wine increased 44%. Some wineries even began lobbying for the right to label their products as a health food. (2)

You can view this original 60 Minutes show here on YouTube (4 min. 15 sec.): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njm1LkXP2sg

Medical researchers around the world have since completed many studies trying to gain more insight into this original French Paradox — red wine phenomenon. Many now believe that the red wine may only be part of the reason why the French have healthier hearts. Further investigation into this original study by Dr. Serge Renaud also showed that compared to Americans, the French eat less, eat a more healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, eat less red meat and prefer cheese instead of milk as their dairy product of choice. This said, there has also been a lot of research providing further evidence of the positive health effects of consuming moderate levels of red wine each day.

The cardiovascular benefits of red wine are a result of its alcohol and flavonoid (resveratrol being one form) content. Alcohol alone in doses of 20 to 30 gm/day can decrease CHD by 40%. The alcohol content of red wine is responsible for the effective absorption of flavonoids and tannins. Red wine also contains a large amount of folic acid, other vitamins and potassium and magnesium, which have beneficial cardiovascular effects. (3)

In summary, alcohol beverages, particularly red wine, when consumed in moderation reduce the risk of acute cardio vascular disease and death. (4) Over 400 studies worldwide, many of them long–term and in large populations, have concluded that most healthy people who drink wine regularly and moderately live longer. The single group exception whose members should not consume any alcohol would be pre–menopausal women with a family history of breast cancer. (5)

The keys to the beneficial aspects of wine drinking are regularity and moderation. The importance of this pattern of consumption is almost impossible to over–emphasize. Overindulgence can be considerably more harmful than total abstinence. (5)

PS: There also is a "French Paradox, Inc." a fine wine and spiritscompany headquartered in Huntington Beach, California.
